Conlan stops Ruiz in West Belfasts Falls Park

Former Olympian wins in style against Argentine challenger.

On Saturday, in West Belfast’s Falls Park, Olympic Bronze medallist Michael Conlan put on a show for his fans, a stones throw from his childhood home, against Diego Alberto Ruiz from Argentina.

Scheduled as a 10 rounder, for the vacant WBA Featherweight Inter-continental belt and Conlans WBO intercontinental title, that he won 2 fights prior against Jason Cunningham, the fight began as expected, with Conlans superb amateur pedigree shining through.

Conlan started by controlling the fight with his perfect jab and regular switching between orthodox and southpaw, preventing  the travelling opponent from setting up any of his own attacks. For most of the fight, Ruiz was a sitting target, struggling to commit to any sort of offensive, Conlan was able to show off his flashy skills, with his hands low for much of the contest.

Finally, in the 9th round, Michael landed a beautiful sweeping right hook to the body and dropped Ruiz to the canvas. After the Argentinian made the count, the home fighter set about barraging him with body shots, with Ruiz  unable to defend himself effectively, referee Howard Foster waved the contest off.

On the undercard, Welsh dynamo Chris Jenkins beat hometown fighter Paddy Gallagher for the British and Commonwealth titles. The bout went to the cards after a technical decision was called in the 9th due to an unintentional cut over Jenkins eye.
