At the iconic Madison Square Garden last Saturday, huge underdog George Kambosos Jr defeated Teofimo Lopez to claim all 3 of the hometown fighters Lightweight belts in the biggest upset of the year.
Lopez, who first gained international recognition last year by soundly beating the then undisputed pound for pound king Vasyl Lomachenko was now on the receiving end of an upset, when Australia’s Kambosos outworked the champion over 12 rounds landing a split decision win.
It was obvious that Kambosos wasn’t just a name on paper very quickly, when he dropped Lopez in the closing seconds of the 1st round with a huge overhand right. Despite lots of back in fourth and Lopez returning the knockdown in kind in the 10th, Kambosos sheer grit and determination to claim the victory shone through.
Although the fight was very close and Lopez showed tremendous skills himself, it was Kambosos who shocked the world, refusing to be deterred and pushing through for this life changing victory.
